** Our set includes the Duclos 80mm front diameter rings so the lenses can be used with a clip-on matte box. We also have adapter rings available to use the lenses with the super lightweight Tilta Mini Matte Box for smaller builds that only require one 4×5″ filter, and a full range of adapter rings to use threaded circular filters on even smaller builds.
Currently available in Sony E Mount and Canon RF Mount, the SP3‘s are Cooke’s way of bringing their look and legacy into a small-form factor optimized for modern mirrorless cameras, weighing in at a little over 1 pound each.
They are a great complement to our Panchro Classic/i lenses at a fraction of the weight, size, and price, great for B or C Cam, gimbal, and drone work. From our experience and the tests we’ve seen, they are a perfect color match to Panchro Classics and thus to Cooke S4’s and Mini S4’s, and would cut together seamlessly without a color grade. The character of the glass is ever so slightly more modern feeling out of the box, with a little bit more contrast + perceived sharpness and a little bit less impressionistic ‘funkiness’ in the edge distortion and focus falloff (depending on the focal length) when compared to what we’ve come to expect from a wide open Panchro, particularly certain rehoused ones.
Whether this was an intentional direction taken on Cooke’s part or a small compromise made in order to achieve the optical engineering of the much smaller size but larger image circle and different sensor depths, it means that the SP3’s really shine when taking advantage of Full Frame sensors like the Sony Burano’s 8.6k Open Gate in order to show their full character (a Super 35 crop would likely reduce more the unique edge falloff, vs. the Panchros optimized for S35).
The SP3s open to a T2.4, have modern and smooth focus/iris gears, and a noticeably well-built and sturdy housing– they feel compact and satisfying to hold in the hand, with the sense that they are unique among Cooke lenses and also unlike any other mirrorless lens out there.
